Planter tips for spring planting

Spring is the perfect time to add fresh color to your outdoor space, and By the Yard planters make it easier than ever. If you picked up one of our planter boxes during our Open House, congratulations. Now it’s time to get planting.
We teamed up with the experts at Sailer’s Greenhouse in Prior Lake to share their best tips for planting containers that thrive all season long. Whether you're decorating a porch, patio, or cabin deck, here’s how to get the most out of your By the Yard planters.
Step 1: Know Your Sunlight
Before you pick out any plants, take note of how much sunlight your planter will get.
- Shade-loving plants like coleus, impatiens, and begonias do best with morning sun and afternoon shade.
- Sun-loving plants such as petunias, geraniums, and dahlias need full afternoon sun to thrive.
Step 2: Choose the Right Plant Mix
The key to a balanced, eye-catching planter is variety. Use the "thriller, filler, spiller" method for great results:
- Thrillers are the tall focal point of the planter. Place 3 to 5 in the center. Try SunPatiens, dahlias, or upright coleus.
- Fillers create lush volume around your thrillers. Use medium-height plants like calibrachoa or lantana.
- Spillers trail over the edge and soften the look. Alternate 3 to 6 around the edge using options like sweet potato vine, lobelia, or petunias.
Step 3: Water and Feed Properly
- Water full-sun planters daily, especially in hot weather.
- Shade planters typically need less water but should still be checked daily.
- Fertilize sun planters two to three times a week and shade planters about every 10 days.
- Never fertilize dry plants. It can damage the roots.
- In mid-summer, trim back leggy plants to encourage fresh growth and longer bloom time.
Step 4: Enjoy the View
Once planted, your By the Yard planters will bring beauty and low-maintenance charm to your space all season long. Bonus tip: many 12-inch hanging baskets can drop directly into our 14×14 planter boxes, making setup even easier.
