5 Tips for a relaxing labor day

By Dan Darvell August 25, 2021 blog , Uncategorized

Nowadays, we tend to take things like weekends for granted. At By the Yard, we know the free time people get to enjoy together is precious, and hard-won. Our employees work hard to build and share elegant, sustainable outdoor furniture so that our customers can enjoy their free time to the fullest. We’re passionate about helping to craft life’s best-lived moments, so we’d like to share some tips for taking a load off and relaxing this Labor Day.

1. Have a Backyard Barbecue

We admit we didn’t invent the concept of the Labor Day barbecue, but we can’t argue with a classic. Unlike the big winter holiday meals, the barbecue is an easy way to enjoy tasty food without being stuck inside a kitchen for hours on end. Even the grill master gets to be out and about and socializing while everything comes together. Throw some burgers and dogs on the grill, maybe some ears of fresh sweet corn, crack open your favorite beverage, and enjoy your outdoor space and the early September weather. You’ve earned it.

2. Watch a Parade

Remember the experience of going to a parade as a kid? It was always so exciting to watch members of the community march down the street, throwing batons, dancing, banging those drums you can feel in your chest. If your town has a Labor Day parade, we recommend heading down to watch it. Whether or not you have little ones, a parade is a great way to relax in an outdoor space and celebrate with your neighbors.

3. Save it For Later

That drywall that needs patching, that dusty floor in the garage, the grass that’s gotten a little longer than you like – it can wait. You shouldn’t have to worry about the little things on Labor Day, and you certainly shouldn’t have to sweep. Give yourself permission to put off chores till next weekend, and instead let your focus be on taking a break. Go sit on a glider and read the book you’ve been wanting to read, take a nap, or just sit and think. Labor Day is a chance to celebrate workers, not to do more work.

4. Enjoy Nature

Studies show that nature lowers blood pressure and stress hormones and increases your serotonin. Getting a chance to unplug, breathe some fresh air and enjoy some natural beauty is a perfect way to hit pause on the stress of our worklife, and center ourselves. Go to a national park, swim in a lake, or just go out back and gaze at your  garden from the comfort of your favorite rocking chair

5. Do a Random Act of Kindness

When we perform acts of kindness, our brains and bodies feel better. That’s because of oxytocin, otherwise known as the “love hormone.” Building connections with others is essential for human happiness, and since Labor Day is all about people coming together for a better world, doing something nice for someone is a lovely way to celebrate. If you have to go out to a store, doing something kind for the people who have to work on Labor Day is an extra special way to acknowledge the holiday while also relaxing and easing your mind.
